Hi paddletramp! Welcome and thanks for joining us! I’ve never seen or heard of a tiger stripe canoe. Post a photo of yours sometime with the sun shining through. Sure sounds pretty!

I canoed on Superior over the summer. I’m just a recreational paddler with a heavy, flat bottom boat that’s easy to tip. So I canoe on sections of the lake with sandy beaches and avoid the rocks and cliffs. That way if we become swimmers it’s an easy reach to pull the swamped boat up on the beach and start over again.

The big danger of Superior is of course the low water temperature. Other challenges to paddlers are wind, swell and choppy waves.

Beyond recreational canoeing on the lake, posessing both skill and a canoe you have confidence in should be a must. That is, you and any passengers should know how to refloat a capsized canoe and get back into it quick enough to avoid hyperthermia.

Here’s one for the ‘ugly’ collumn. $10 hat topped with a bug net.

😮 Now that’s a hat! But ‘ugly’ doesn’t even begin to describe it! :p That’s just what I would want when the bugs were biting though. ‘Cept I am generally accompanied by the fashion police, or fashionista’s.

Our last visit in the UP, wifey’s sister gave me a ‘Buzz Off’ cap. If it continues to get sun and wet, it should attain ‘ugly’ status in a few seasons!

Of course I am alway looking for that perfect hat. So someday I may find a bush hat that suits my liking.

OBTW, this isn’t an off topic thread. It’s Gear for the Trip! 😎

My best trip ever was a voyage through Topock Gorge on the Colorado River. I have made several, but what qualifys this as “best” is this time both my father and son acompanied me on the trip.

Son and his grandpa shared the same canoe and it was a delight to see them together experiencing canoe tripping for the first time.

It was springtime in the desert. There were lots of flowering trees and the weather was warm and pleasant. We made stops for picinic lunches on sandy shores. We swam and played with a ball in the water. We camped overnight twice and cooked delicious meals over an open fire.

We stopped once to take a short hike to view some Indian petroglyphs. Towards the end of our journey we paddled through some rock formations that resembled tunnels. Oh,and once we got to the end of our journey at Lake Havasu, we got to see London Bridge!

I think your on to something, moving bow seat forward. The specs for your canoe show it has 2.5″ of rocker in front and 1″ in the rear. So I’m guessing if you can get more of the front wet you might track better.

Double blade, do you mean like a kayak paddle? I don’t know anything about how to select one. But would be interested to know too. Just wanted to give your post a reply. OBTW, you’re welcome at my camp any time. 😉

I’m still scratching my head trying to figure out how this solo strap is supposed to work saving your knees.

Is it something that’s attached to the gunwales and it supports your knees like a sling or hammock?

Good narrative, Craig. I was half expecting you to say you had to fly sitting in your boat!:p

    WOW!

OK but can you load a canoe up for a week and paddle like that? Because if you can I want to ty it on the Allagash next year.

Well I can’t. They have a special name for people with flat bottom canoes that try stuff like that…. swimmers! :p
