Anybody catch thatr Ray Mears show on OLN…”Bushcraft?”. He has an episode where he paddles the Missinaibi River in Northern Ontario and has himself a tiny mishap. There is no doubting Ray’s paddling skills or his bush skills but it was a real eyeopener as he had his paddle ripped from his hands. It was toooo fast to see exactly what happened, he was paddling some rapids making course sorrections and it looked as tho his paddle wedged a sunken log or rock…one second in his hands…next second gone! He had his spare ready and recovered the lost paddle in no time but it just goes to show how easy it can be to get yourself in a jam when you are out there! Great show by the way ….highly recommended viewing!

I paddle a tandem even when going solo….turn it around and sit backwards on the bow seat….tooooo many hours spent riding a desk at work usually results in me switching back and forth from kneeling to sitting trying to relieve pressure on the knees and ankles!

I have a 16′ Kevlar Canoe with Bottom Bulge and the canoe shell is more fexible then what I’m used to. I’ve been thinking about taking it tripp’n next year, but I’m concerned about this bulge.

Am I making more of this then I need to?

When it’s loaded the Bulge will go away?

    Does the canoe need reinforcing?

Definitely sounds like its hogged…in Newfoundland we would say that the boat is a “water hog”…all means the same thing….boat aint gonna perform that well for ya…still water ready but performance drops…definitely slower, definitely gonna oilcan in wave, definitely gonna make ya wet in rough conditions, definitely gonna loose some stability…basically means that the bottom has warped and now the bow and stern are gonna ride lower in the water than they were intended and in extreme cases they will ride lower than the center of the boat…this isn’t a problem thats gonna go away, the boat is still seaworthy, but you are gonna work a lot harder with it than a boat that wasn’t hogged….although take into account that my experience with water hogs is from helping the Old Man with building wooden fishing boats…skiffs, trapskiffs and dorys, maybe someone here who has more experience with kevlar can offer a suggestion…
