Hello, my name is Ethan Mitchell and I’ve spent a lot of time in canoes but I just discovered these forums. I have a historical interest in places where native peoples or early settlers dug trenches across short portages, or similar improvements for canoeing. Here in Vermont, one of these trenches is referred to as a “dugway”. It isn’t huge, but it tells an interesting story about how people used to travel.
I am appealing to the collective knowledge of the folks on these forums: have you seen anything else like this? If so, where, and do you know what the story is?
