An engaging book, exciting and easy to read, it will hold your interest to the very last page. The story is set in the wilderness of the BWCAW and Quetico Provincial Parks. Landers creates a 1960’s type character, by the name of Pender, with a closet full of post trauma from Vietnam, recent job- and age-related stresses to transform. Pender embarks on a soul-searching and romantic solo canoe journey to reconnect with his college sweetheart from some forty years earlier. Pender, traveling from Ely, and Annette traveling solo from Atikokan, plan to rendezvous on Scripture Island in the Quetico. You will both love and hate Pender before you meet Annette and learn of their fate. Alone on the Shield is the perfect action-packed book for a seasoned or newbie paddler to take on trail to read.
