Glad you liked the idea OBA.
Sure is a lot cheaper that buying one.

I also poked some holes in the bottom of the can to let any water escape. Even painted them up too!
Arts and crafts at it’s finest.

The thing that I noticed was that over time, as I started to correct the bow of the canoe because of a rock or other obstacle he would read my moves and correct accordingly. Nothing said. No words exchanged.
He let me read the river and trusted my judgment to make the right call. And because of the years we spent doing this, he learned by my body moves what it was I was trying to do.
When you can canoe down a small chute in a rapid and have both paddlers draw together to side step a large rock the stern paddler can’t see, it’s almost like a ballet.
Takes a lot of trust, faith and time before you can get there though.
Just MHO for what it’s worth.

On one trip, my buddy broke his paddle. If it weren’t for the spare only one of would have been able to paddle our loaded canoe for the rest of the trip.
I consider an extra paddle like insurance. Something you know you might need but never want to use. I’d rather have it and not need it than not take it and wish I had.

CCR is my first home on the net for wilderness canoeing related info. I first joined in 2002 and have enjoyed the stay. But it’s getting really cluttered with spam. My son Chris (Canoe Kid) won’t visit it anymore.
Sad really, when a 15 year old will not visit a site he once loved.
Yea, CCR has had its off-topic moments, but I enjoyed the fireside chats. If not to post on them, at least to read. No one forces a person to reply to anything.
Like a cottage that never gets used, the hornets, bees, and birds are starting to take it over. It won’t be long before it becomes devoured by the weeds and weather and no longer functions any more. And for me, that will be a sad day and a great loss to the wilderness canoeing community. So much info lost like a portage forgotten and overgrown.
So here I am, another visitor. Hoping for something better.
