I make lots of vaseline cotton balls and keep them in a small sealable bag (that once had fishhooks). I use them often. Like you said, they work great.

WKG, that is some serious improvement. glad to see the boat didn’t get trashed.

I was looking at some of the paddles from whiskeyjack like the Whiskey River as my main paddle and keeping an aluminum shaft/plastic blade paddle for rocks and as a backup.

to keep the sun off my head, I usually wear an Outback style hat. If it gets hot, I dip a bandana in the water and wrap my head before putting the hat on. Sun stays off my face, head stays cool.

Another useful item is the Buff (from buffwear.com). wrap your neck, head or face. use it as a bandana, beanie, balaclava, scarf, headband. They’re incredibly useful.

For day trips, get a telescoping paddle from your local Wal-Mart. They are a bit short even when fully extended, but will get you back to shore if your paddle breaks.

For longer trips, get a cheap full sized paddle.

With any luck you won’t ever use them.
