Tumplines were originally used back in the day by the voyageurs of the North American fur trade to help carry their heavy loads of pelts and rations across portages. The tumpline should NOT be worn on the forehead. Rather, it is placed across the top of the head, just to the rear of the hairline. By doing this, the weight of the load is transferred off your shoulders and it also keeps the load over your center of balance.
Attractive and durable. Used bare, this is a fine yoke for infrequent, short portages. For tougher portages, add pads. Satin varnish. 1 1/2 lbs. (Requires mounting hardware.)
Yokes provide strength and rigidity at the canoe's mid-point. Wide yokes allow for a more comfortable portage, since the additional width distributes weight more evenly on the neck and shoulders.
Yokes provide strength and rigidity at the canoe's mid-point. They also make it easier to portage. This yoke measures 13/16" (thickness) x 2-3/4" (ends).
The Harmony Contoured Yoke Pad is made from closed cell minicell foam that is dense and resilient and supports the weight of the canoe well. The contoured shape provides stability when going up or down hill and moves the bulk of the canoe weight onto your shoulders for greater comfort. Peel and stick adhesive attaches easily to conventional flat wood yokes.
Superior Portage Pads (Standard) have aluminum fasteners that attach easily around your yoke with wing-nuts. The pads have a sound plywood bottom and the foam pad is encased in durable, weather-resistant black cordura.
Universal yokes are slotted and include clamps to mount on the canoe gunnel. This enables the yoke to be removed when not in use. It is padded, making it more comfortable on the neck and shoulders. Its width is 2-3/8". Hardware and pad included.
