Lizard Creek Fort Dodge, Iowa Whitewater Paddling
May 19, 2018
Dates: May 19, 2018
Trip Leader: Vern Fish (vernfish@aol.com)
319-215-7830
Location: Plan to be at Phinney Park canoe access in Fort Dodge, Iowa by noon on Saturday, May 20. Phinney Park is located between Hwy 169 and the Des Moines River. I have attached map of Lizard Creek which shows where Phinney Park is located.
Paddle: We will eat lunch and then drive to the put in point. Bring your own lunch. For more details on Lizard Creek check out page 94 of the most recent version of Paddling Iowa by Nate Hoogeveen.
We will put in at either Hwy P29 (Lentsch Access) which will require 13.6 miles of paddling or P41 (Rasch Access) which will shorten the trip to less than six miles. The upper stretches of this paddle include several very nice riffles and small drops. The last couple of miles include the Gypsum Miles Rapids (Class I-II), a boulder field and another Class I drop through a breached low head dam before arriving at Phinney Park.
Dinner: There is local bar near Phinney Park where we can eat supper before heading home.
Canoes/Kayak: You must bring your own boat. Your boat will hit rocks which may cause dents or holes. If you have a spray skirt for your canoe, you should bring it.
Cost: There is no cost for the trip.
Confirmation: If you plan to go, please confirm by emailing vernfish@aol.com by May 6, 2017.
