Atikokan has a rich history as a mining and timber community, but today it is known as the “canoeing capital of Canada.” It is a small town (pop. 3,400) just north of Quetico Provincial Park and hosts one of the park’s six Ranger Stations, where visitors can obtain Quetico permits and information. North of Atikokan stretch Ontario’s Crown Lands, public land filled with waterways that make great paddling alternatives to the parks, including such mythic attractions as the castle on White Otter Lake. The town itself merits its reputation, and has plenty of lodges, outfitters, and shops to supply your trek into the surrounding wilderness.
