Nessmuk xl is an enlarged version of the replica Nessmuk. It is meant to function in a manner consistent with the original Nessmuk but with a larger person and/or more weight burden. We have carefully kept the designed hull shape in this enlarged version to offer the same feel relative to paddling, maneuverability and seaworthiness.

Hi Everyone, I own the 10” Nessmuk and I’m the guy in the photo of the XL on this page. I’ve paddled the XL many times under the worst conditions with lots of gear. It did everything I asked of it. Using a double blade for lake crossings and single for quiet paddling along shores, it was always comfortable. I sit on a 2” boat cushion and use a backrest I design/build with adjustable foot bars. This provides complete back comfort with an easily adjustable foot bar instead of attached foot pedals. I thought I needed a larger boat & bought a Placid Rapidfire. It also does everything I wanted in a solo pack canoe but after using it 3 times, I realize the XL is perfect for my needs. The Rapidfire will go up for sale soon and I will have Dave Curtis build a new XL to my specifications. It will have foot pedals installed but I will still use my own back rests for better back support. If anyone would like a more complete review, send me a note and I will provide you with lots of details. My email is tjkayser46@gmail.com

I’ve paddled this canoe in some of the worst conditions was always comfortable. I’m now 73 with arthritis and recently parted with my favorite Curtis Canoe. It was a glass Bluegill at about 42 lbs trimmed for sit. on the bottom with a double paddle. I thought I needed a tripping canoe with speed and tremendous capacity for a dog and heavy load. Testing included 4 Swift pack style canoes and David Yost’s personal Rapidfire. All were tested under the worst conditions with following seas, quartering seas and everything in-between. The Rapidfire was finally chosen because it excelled in all the above criteria. The photo on this page shows me paddling one of the first XL’s on Deep Pond in Mendon NY. It was not considered because I’ve paddled it so many times under similar conditions. It seemed I thought I needed the. longer boat. After paddling the new canoe only three times, I realized that every time I paddled an Nessmuk XL, I always smiled. It did everything asked of it and never felt it lacked initial or final stability, just like the Placid Rapidfire. Now I released I’n not going on any more long trips with large dogs riding along. A smaller canoe of similiar weight will fill the bill. The new Rapidfire will go up for sale this week and I will ask Dave Curtis to build me a new XL with slotted rails, foot pegs and no seat in sage green. Since I’ve has so much paddle time in this little canoe, I’d be happy to answer any questions on the XL or any of the canoes tested. tjkayser46@gmail.com
