Canoeing.com Definition: Frameless packs sit upright in canoes yet maintain a low center of gravity. Single-compartment, top loading packs are easily fit with waterproof liners. Traditional canvas models feature leather straps, buckles and riveted canvas joints in two main shapes: envelope and rectangular. Modern interpretations come in Cordura or heavy nylon. Added features include internal frames, suspension systems, hip belts, sternum straps and/or compression straps for more comfortable portaging.

EXPLORE TRADITIONAL PACKS BY SHAPE:
Envelope Packs
These pillow shaped packs sit closer to your back while portaging, but typically cannot stand upright unaided.
Rectangular Packs
With flat sides and bottoms to increase volume, these packs stand upright unaided when packed, in the canoe or at the campsite.
