Canoeing.com Definition: Hard-shell boxes and barrels provide sturdy, watertight storage for food, kitchen items and fragile or bulky gear. They protect gear and conceal food odors.
Wanigan – A rectangular storage box traditionally made from wood and carried with tumplines. Modern wanigans are available in more durable, waterproof materials and outfitted with shoulder straps.
Modern Storage Boxes – Available in a range of sizes and styles, modern hard shell boxes come in pack-styles and as hand-held carrying cases. Some styles have internal padding to secure fragile items. Often designed to float.
Barrels – Hard-shell barrels typically come in 30 L and 60 L sizes. O-ring seals keep barrels watertight and metal snap rings secure lids. Available with handles and shoulder straps. Some paddlers make their own from used olive barrels, typically small enough to fit two side by side in a canoe pack.
