For the literary-minded, the Big Two-Hearted River may be Michigan’s best-known river, thanks to the two short stories Ernest Hemingway titled with its name. Those who’ve actually read the stories know Michigan’s Fox river as well. Near Seney in the Upper Peninsula, it’s actually the watercourse Hemingway describes in the stories. The state is blessed with 14 other National Wild and Scenic Rivers, totaling 625 designated miles. One of them, the AuSable in lower Michigan, is well known to racing paddlers as the route of the 120 mile AuSable River Canoe Marathon. |
