Like Houghton, MI is the gateway to the Keweenah Peninsula, Copper Harbor, MI is the gateway to Isle Royale National Park: a fitting claim for a small town once the launching pad for explorers and prospectors during the U.P. mining boom of the 1800s. Taking advantage of its location at the tip of the Keweenah Peninsula, speculators arrived by boat and passed through town on their way to scour the peninsula for copper deposits. Copper Harbor never yielded impressive copper stores of its own, yet it came of age under this deluge of visitors. It continues as a new kind of launching point today–for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers setting out to explore the surrounding peninsula or travel by ferry to Isle Royale.
