The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) covers 1 million acres (405,000 ha), with over 1100 lakes, along the Minnesota-Canada border. Since 1978 and the passage of the BWCA Wilderness Act, these lands have been designated "an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." The canoeist is a perfect example of this visitor: one who appreciates natural beauty, embraces the terrain's challenges, and travels in a way that minimizes human impact. With 200,000 visitors a year the BWCAW is the most popular wilderness area in the country! There are 59 paddling entry points spread between Cook, Ely, Tofte, Isabella, and Grand Marais to begin your adventures in the BWCAW.
